About the author

Selma Lagerlof (1858-1940) was a Swedish writer whose stories have been translated into many languages. A universal theme runs through all of them — a belief that the essential goodness in a human being can be awakened through understanding and love. This story is set amidst the mines of Sweden, rich in iron ore, which figure large in the history and legends of that country. The Rattrap is told somewhat in the manner of a fairy tale.

    Story takes place in the mines of Sweden, where iron is extracted from ores, and centers around a vendor of rattraps who relies on gathering materials by begging at stores and farms, or by thievery, in order to make a living. He has led a difficult life, full of hardship and suffering, and as a result, he has become pessimistic about the world around him. He has come to believe that the world is like a rattrap, in which the attractive elements of nature, such as seas and lands, as well as other human needs like wealth, clothing, and food, function as bait that lure individuals into the trap. He often indulges in daydreams about this concept during his free time.
    The Rattrap (Summary In English And Hindi)
    One evening, while peddling his wares, he encounters a small cottage on the side of the road. He knocks on the door and requests shelter for the night. Accustomed to being treated poorly, he is surprised to be welcomed warmly by the owner, an elderly man without a wife or children. The host offers him food, shelter, and engaging conversation, revealing that he used to work in a mine and now relies on his cow for sustenance. He even shows the rattrap seller his earnings of thirty kronor in three ten-kronor notes. The next day, the two men set out together, but when the host is absent, the rattrap seller steals the thirty kronor and departs for a new destination.
     
    The rattrap seller felt a sense of pride in his actions as he continued on his journey, but soon found himself lost, tired, and cold in a forest as night approached. Despite his efforts to find a way out, he felt trapped. Just as he was about to give up, he stumbled upon an iron mill that was still operational. Inside, he met a master smith and his helper working at the furnace, who offered him shelter for the night.
     
    Later on, the owner of the mill, an ironmaster, mistook him for an old friend from his time in the regiment and invited him to stay at his house for Christmas. The rattrap seller saw an opportunity to make some money and pretended to be the man the ironmaster thought he was. However, he soon became uncomfortable with the situation and declined the invitation to stay at the ironmaster's house. The ironmaster's daughter attempted to persuade him to stay and even though the rattrap seller suspected that she knew he had done something wrong, he agreed to stay until Christmas Eve.
     
    During his stay, he was treated with kindness and care by his hosts. However, on Christmas Day, the ironmaster discovered that the rattrap seller was not his old friend and threatened to turn him over to the authorities. Eventually, the ironmaster decided not to cause trouble on Christmas Eve and let the rattrap seller go. As he prepared to leave, the daughter had a change of heart and wanted him to stay for Christmas no matter what. The rattrap seller even expressed his thoughts on feeling trapped like a rat, but despite everything, the rattrap seller decided to spend his time with the ironmaster and his daughter at their manor instead of leaving for his journey. The daughter informed him during gift-giving time that her father wanted the coat he was wearing as a Christmas present. She also kindly invited him to spend the next Christmas with them. The seller was speechless and touched by her kindness. The following day, the ironmaster and his daughter learned that one of the mill's old employees had been robbed by a rattrap seller. When they got back to the manor, they discovered that their guest had left and left a gift for the daughter, a rattrap, and the stolen thirty kronor. He also included a note asking her to return the money to its rightful owner, explaining that it was a Christmas present from a rat freed by their hospitality.
     
    The story teaches readers about having faith in humanity. Although the daughter knew that the rattrap seller had a past of doing wrong things, she still showed him kindness and compassion, believing that it would help him see the goodness in humanity once more. The seller, who previously saw the world as a trap, was able to realize the error of his ways and made amends for his actions.
