The story Going Places begins with Sophie and her friend Jansie talking on their way back from school. Sophie shares her plans to open a boutique and become a famous fashion designer like Mary Quant. However, Jansie, who is more practical, reminds Sophie that they are expected to work at the biscuit factory after their studies and that opening a boutique would require a lot of money. Sophie considers working at a shop to save money, but Jansie explains that it may not pay well. Sophie also considers becoming an actress as it pays more.
At home, Sophie's younger brother Derek mocks her dreams, and Sophie reflects on her family's poverty-stricken conditions, including her mother's crooked back. Sophie's brother Geoff, who is a silent apprentice mechanic, seems to know about places she doesn't, and she suspects him of being well-informed.
