John Hoyer Updike was born on March 18, 1932, in Reading, Pennsylvania, United States. He was an American poet, short-story writer and novelist. His notable works are Rabbit Angstrom, Henry Bech and The Witches of Eastwick. He died on the 27th of January, 2009 at the age of 76 in Danvers, Massachusetts, United States.

Jack started a tradition of telling bedtime stories to his daughter, Jo, two years ago when she was only two years old. He would make up stories about an animal named Roger who faced a problem and sought the advice of a wise owl, who directed him to the wizard. The wizard would then solve the problem but demand more money than Roger had, and then help him find the additional funds.
However, Saturdays became difficult for Jack as Jo had become restless and did not fall asleep easily. One particular Saturday, Jo suggested that the animal in the story be a skunk, and Jack began to tell a story about a skunk named Roger who had a bad smell that made it difficult for him to make friends. This story was based on some of Jack's own childhood experiences and was intended to teach an important lesson.
The story continued – Roger was distressed about his unpleasant odor and sought advice from a wise owl. The owl suggested that Roger should seek out a wizard for a solution. As Jack was narrating his story, Jo interrupted him and asked if magic spells were real. She had started to question the existence of certain things, seeking validation for her doubts. Jack replied that magic spells were real only in stories.

However, Jack reassured her that this was not the case, and the other animals eventually accepted Roger as he was. With the story concluded, Jack wanted to leave the room to help his wife Clare paint.
